It is with great sadness to report that we had to say goodbye to our Lexie this morning. Lexie's knee had been getting progressively worse over the past few months and it was becoming more and more difficult to manage her pain. We've been discussing Lexie's prognosis with our vet for several months and we eventually came to the conclusion that we were soon not going to be able to effectively manage her pain. Horse Olympics
This last Saturday was our first Horse Olympics and Chili Cookoff out at Hanaeleh! Our volunteers did an excellent job of working with the horses through four main events: On-ground Keyhole (where they would run from one side of the arena, turn around, then run back), moving through the cones (without knocking them over), walking over the poles (without touching them), and walking through the "car wash" (horses don't like things touching their faces, so this was more difficult than it may seem … [Read more...]

For those who may not remember, we picked Lexie up at the end of November from the individuals who had offered to take her and care for her. This is the condition in which we found her: The family who had her told us that they were not sure why Lexie looked so bad- we believe it was a simple case of neglect, nothing more. UPDATE: Lexie
Last week Lexie got her feet trimmed by the farrier. He said she was very good for him, and he trimmed her front hoof to help accommodate her bad knee so she is more comfortable. We have seen a big change in Lexie over the past few weeks- she has begun to relax, and has definitely put on weight. There were several patches of hair that were missing along her coat, most likely due to malnutrition, and we are starting to see some new hair growth there.
