UPDATE: Brutus’ Surgery

April 4, 2014 By ezarkos

Brutus wakes up after surgery.

Today was Brutus' gelding surgery at Hanaeleh Horse Rescue.  We are very thankful for the vets from Dr. Secor's office who came out to do his geld at the facility where we are keeping Brutus, so we did not have to transport him to the clinic.  Brutus did very well during and after the surgery, which was relatively quick and simple- while only one testicle was visibly dropped, the other was still easily accessed. There is apparently a superstition on the racetrack that says that if you throw … [Read more...]

UPDATE: Brutus, Our Latest Rescue

April 2, 2014 By ezarkos

Many of you have asked for a Brutus update - we have some wonderful news! On Saturday, Brutus got his feet done by our farrier.  He was good (for not having had his feet done in a long time, anyway). They will need a few more trims before they are back to normal, but at least things are now headed in the right direction. On Monday, our vet came out to assess Brutus for a geld. EXCELLENT NEWS! While only one testicle is descended, the vet could feel the other one, so he can do a regular … [Read more...]

A Horse’s View of the Kentucky Derby

May 1, 2018 By Hanaeleh

Brutus in this picture is only three years old, the same age as those horses racing in the Kentucky Derby. Notice how ungainly he is; he will not stop growing until six years old.

This Saturday is the 144th Kentucky Derby. As we have several Thoroughbreds at Hanaeleh, I thought it would be interesting to get a horse's point-of-view of the race. Brutus- 5 year-old Thoroughbred I was bred to race, although you would not know it from my conformation. My mother's name is Florecita and my sire is Mud Route, the son of Strawberry Road, a famous Thoroughbred racehorse in New Zealand. I was weaned from my mother at a scant four months so she could be bred again, so I never … [Read more...]

Rescued from Neglect: Two Arabian Mares

February 19, 2018 By ezarkos

Quite a bit of rescue work happens behind the scenes; answering phone calls, getting information about horses and determining how we can best help in a particular situation. The story of these two horses actually started two months ago, when we received a phone call from a concerned individual, letting us know that there were two Arabian mares who were being neglected and were starving. We let them know that we could help, and ensured that the horses would be fed. After two months of trying … [Read more...]
