Lexie

January 18, 2016 By ezarkos

Lexie-horse-rescue-orange-countyIt is with great sadness to report that we had to say goodbye to our Lexie this morning. Lexie’s knee had been getting progressively worse over the past few months and it was becoming more and more difficult to manage her pain.

We’ve been discussing Lexie’s prognosis with our vet for several months and we eventually came to the conclusion that we were soon not going to be able to effectively manage her pain.  We increased her pain medication a few weeks ago to alleviate her suffering. The medication levels to keep her pain-free were so high that long-term use would have caused kidney failure, so we could only use that as a short-term solution. However, we were able to ensure that her last weeks of her life were happy and pain-free.

Lexie has been at Hanaeleh since November 2014, when we picked her up from a situation where she was not being cared for.  She recovered quite nicely, and enjoyed being groomed and taking naps in the sun. She was very much loved by all of our volunteers, as well as all of the geldings at the ranch. Although we only knew Lexie at the end of her life, she was a very sweet horse, and we appreciated her spunk as well as her patience with everyone who worked with her.

Lexie will be sorely missed by all of us at Hanaeleh. Our hearts are with all of you who also feel the loss of such a good little pony. Rest in Peace, sweet girl.

Glenda Gets a Brand-New Coop (Thanks to Our Amazing Volunteers!)

August 28, 2025 By ezarkos

Glenda is one of the chickens at our ranch, and she had previously been living in a coop we built when we moved onto the property. The coop was sturdy enough to keep larger predators out, but unfortunately mice and rats were able to find their way inside. We did what we could to try to strengthen … [Read More...]
