RIP Hershey

February 4, 2023 By ezarkos

It is with great sadness that we report this past week we had to help Hershey cross the Rainbow Bridge. Hershey was a 27 year-old Appendix (Thoroughbred and Quarter horse cross) who was one of our first rescues. He was a show jumper, but his owner could no longer afford him, and he had some personality *quirks* that made him difficult to work with. Hershey had been in a box stall for much of his life, and except for a few months in a pasture, he was not out with other horses, and he did not have … [Read more...]

UPDATE 2022: Hershey

January 18, 2022 By ezarkos

Hershey is an Appendix (Quarter horse/Thoroughbred cross) gelding. He came back to Hanaeleh a few years ago when his owner was unable to care for him. He is in his mid-20s, and is now a permanent resident of Hanaeleh. Hershey has navicular, and he has arthritis in his hips, so it is difficult for him to canter sometimes, but we still exercise him regularly. We bought him some boots so he is more comfortable when he is out on the pavement, but he seems comfortable in the arena. Elizabeth also … [Read more...]

Driving Hershey

Driving Hershey

I have always been fascinated with horse driving, but it is an expensive and exacting sport. Several years ago when we rescued a Friesian named D'Artagnan, I had a short foray into the horse driving discipline. He was enjoyable to drive, as long as you didn't want to stop (stopping is actually very important for a driving horse). Still, we had a lot of fun, and he was able to continue to get exercise without being ridden. Why Horse Driving? Driving is great for some older horses who may not be … [Read more...]

New Adoption and Hershey Returns to Hanaeleh

July 28, 2020 By ezarkos

Although Hanaeleh is a relatively small rescue, and cannot take in every horse who is in need, we do our best to network horses, both internally and externally, in order to help find them new homes. When we were sent a plea from a woman who was looking for a home for Gabriel, a Friesian-Quarter horse cross, however, we knew we would easily be able to find him a home! And we did quickly find this guy a wonderful new horsie mom up in L.A. Elizabeth was scheduled to pick up Hershey from his … [Read more...]

Argento raced when he was younger, and his registered named is Little Cairo. He is a descendent of American Pharaoh, and was sold as a … [Read More...]

Help “Spirit” 9 y/o Buckskin Quarter Horse Gelding Find a New Home (Norco CA)

June 17, 2025 By ezarkos

We were contacted by one of our supporters who had rescued a nine year-old buckskin Quarter Horse gelding from auction. He was shut down at first, but she has done quite a bit of work with him on the ground and he is starting to come around and be more sociable. Sadly, Spirit has navicular, and … [Read More...]
