The Sheep Get a New Haircut!

May 14, 2024 By ezarkos

This past weekend the sheep were sheared! This is an ordeal that takes just a few minutes for each sheep, but definitely requires a skilled sheep shearer with the appropriate equipment. We are very lucky that Daryll Ruffolo comes out to shear the sheep every year, because he understands the special needs of the Babydoll sheep!

We started with Robert Bruce, who was a very naughty sheep and kept trying to kick Daryll while he was being sheared. We discovered that he had a little skin issue, but that will clear up now that he has been sheared. Daryll also trimmed his feet so he is set for the next month! When he was done with his haircut he ran out of the stall and began helping Gabriel eat his breakfast.

Ferdinand was next to get his trim, and he was much better than Robert Bruce, and therefore it took much less time to get him sheared and his feet trimmed. When he was done, he and Robert Bruce sniffed each other, as if they didn’t recognize each other without their wool!

Magellan was last, and was the best (he gets into the most trouble around the ranch, but he’s always the best for his trims). He just sat there and chilled while Daryll sheared him and trimmed his hooves. He is getting old and has some arthritis that makes him a bit achy, but last month we had the vet out to give him some medicine to help alleviate the inflammation and make him feel better. He has done very well on the medication, however, and seems to feel much better!

Many thanks to Daryll for coming out and shearing the boys! They feel and look so much cooler, and are now ready for the summer!

Robert Bruce had a very thick coat so you would think he’d be happy with a haircut!

Ferdinand was a good boy during his trim!

Ferdinand’s roaning is much more apparent after his trim.

The boys had lovely, thick coats but it’s so expensive to spin that we just give the wool away.
Ferdinand and Robert Bruce didn’t waste any time asking for a treat after their haircut!
