Update: Ulysses (August, 2020)

August 13, 2020 By ezarkos

Ulysses is an Appendix gelding and he came to Hanaeleh a little over eight years ago! Time flies when you're rehabbing horses! We rescued him from the Riverside shelter on July 21st in 2012. He was scheduled to be put down two days later because he was diagnosed as being neurological. In addition, he was emaciated and it was obvious that he had been severely abused- there were scars and wounds all over his body. It took a long time for Ulysses to learn to trust people again, but now he is the … [Read more...]

Update: Ulysses

December 19, 2018 By ezarkos

Ulysses came to us several years ago a very different horse than the one he is now. He was severely abused by charros, then abandoned and left to die in a riverbed in Riverside. He was picked up by animal control, and slated to be euthanized the following Monday because he is neurological. Hanaeleh happened to be at the animal shelter to pick up another horse, and a volunteer begged us to take him with us. We put him on the trailer, and the rest is history. It took a long time for Ulysses to … [Read more...]

Ulysses came to Hanaeleh from Riverside Animal Shelter. He was slated to be put down because he was neurological; he had been severely abused and his abusers had abandoned him in the riverbed to starve to death.  Ulysses was covered in scars across his body, with so much scar tissue on his legs he most likely had several bowed tendons.  He is unable to stand still on three feet (he loses his balance and moves forward), but with daily turnout he has kept his feet trimmed.  One of the … [Read more...]

Glenda Gets a Brand-New Coop (Thanks to Our Amazing Volunteers!)

August 28, 2025 By ezarkos

Glenda is one of the chickens at our ranch, and she had previously been living in a coop we built when we moved onto the property. The coop was sturdy enough to keep larger predators out, but unfortunately mice and rats were able to find their way inside. We did what we could to try to strengthen … [Read More...]
