Hello everybody!
We hope that you are doing well and staying dry! We will be sending out a newsletter next week, so be sure to look for it!
For those of you who are planning on coming out on Saturday, I wanted to give you an update of our policy during inclement weather:
1. If it is pouring outside, then feel free to sleep in. 🙂 There is little we can do if the horses and stalls are sopping wet. It gets slippery and dangerous even to try to clean when the weather is very bad.
2. If there are some light sprinkles, please text me in the morning to see if we are going to meet. Sometimes it will be raining in other places in Orange County, but not in the canyon. I won’t be out at the facility before 8am, so I won’t be able to let you know what the weather is, so PLEASE don’t text me before then. Well, you can, but I won’t answer until 8am, or I might send you a grumpy, “Give me another hour to sleep!” text. My number: (949) 842-7408.
3. We are going to reschedule our open house to next week. The weather promises to be much more cooperative! 🙂
4. If you do come out, please be sure to wear rain boots or shoes you don’t mind getting muddy. And it will be muddy. We have a few pair of rain boots in the shed you are more than welcome to borrow if they fit, but if you are a regular volunteer you may want to invest in more attractive and better-fitting rain gear.
5. Please do not worry about the horses in this weather. We do not blanket our horses, but instead allow them to grow their winter coats, which gives them a much better ability to regulate their body temperature and stay dry. All of our horses have shelters, and the wood that we put up between the stalls helps to block the wind. Horses are happiest when it is about 50 degrees (and that is with their summer coat!) so they are probably enjoying this weather much more than they enjoy the summer heat.
