Ollie’s Sinus Infection

January 7, 2025 By ezarkos

Ollie.

A few weeks ago we noticed that Ollie had quite a bit of snot coming out of his nose- it was reminiscent of childhood snotty noses and pretty disgusting, to be honest. We wiped the area clean and contacted the vet, who said to put him on some antihistamines for a few days as several horses seemed to have come down with a similar issue due to the winds and seasonal allergies.

Since Ollie’s appetite was the same (voracious) and he did not appear lethargic, we were not overly concerned (just a bit grossed out).

While the antihistamines helped a little, they didn’t clear up the issue, so the vet came to visit him the following week and started him on a round of antibiotics. She was concerned that he might have an abscessed tooth and suggested a full exam and radiographs to make sure.

When the vet’s team returned, they did a visual inspection in his mouth which did not indicate any abnormalities, so they took radiographs of his skull to make sure that there wasn’t anything higher in his sinus cavity that was causing the infection.

Thankfully the radiographs didn’t show anything other than a potential sinus infection. Since Ollie had to be sedated for the exam and x-ray, the vet also floated his teeth (we also did a little sheath-cleaning before he was fully awake).

Ollie has responded well to the antibiotics, and we are very thankful that this wasn’t anything more serious!

Dr. Hunter and her assistant Gina take radiographs of Ollie’s skull to make sure he doesn’t have an abscessed tooth.
One of Ollie’s radiographs. Look how long the teeth are! Thankfully everything looks healthy!
