UPDATE: Brutus’ Surgery

April 4, 2014 By ezarkos

Today was Brutus’ gelding surgery at Hanaeleh Horse Rescue.  We are very thankful for the vets from Dr. Secor’s office who came out to do his geld at the facility where we are keeping Brutus, so we did not have to transport him to the clinic.  Brutus did very well during and after the surgery, which was relatively quick and simple- while only one testicle was visibly dropped, the other was still easily accessed.

There is apparently a superstition on the racetrack that says that if you throw the testicles in front of the horse, he will run faster (maybe to try to catch up with them?). To that superstition, Dr. Watanabe made sure to throw them BEHIND Brutus as a way to perhaps make him slow and steady. 🙂

It will take about two weeks for Brutus to heal completely, and about a month for all of the testosterone to finally dissipate.  We will have to walk him twice a day for the next week or so to keep the swelling down, and we will have to keep an eye on his left knee as well.  He is gaining weight, however, and has been losing his winter coat now that he is getting fed regularly.  We again thank all of those people who have helped Brutus so far, and appreciate all of those who have donated on his behalf to Hanaeleh Horse Rescue. If you’d like to donate, simply click the link on this page. No donation is too small!  Thank you!
