UPDATE: Garnet – Sept 2023

September 12, 2023 By ezarkos

Garnet before and after sponsor a horse

Garnet was rescued by Hanaeleh a little over two years ago. Her previous owner was moving out of state, and couldn't afford to take Garnet with her, but wanted to make sure that Garnet got a safe home. Her concern was compounded by the fact that she believed that Garnet had COPD,  and was unable to breathe sufficiently. The owner had kept Garnet from doing much more than a walk for the three years she had owned her, as Garnet would start to wheeze and could not get enough air. We tried … [Read more...]

Rylee Gets a Friend (it’s Garnet!)

February 26, 2023 By ezarkos

Rylee is a cute Peruvian Paso who we rescued at the end of January. She has DSLD, which means the tendons in her hind legs are stretching out, which can cause discomfort, but she is on a daily pain medication to keep her comfortable. DSLD can be managed through proper hoof trims and pain medication, but there is no cure. We originally put Rylee into a stall that was next to the paddock where we were keeping Grace, Hope and Garnet. We wanted to put her into a paddock, but when we put her down … [Read more...]

Helping Garnet Recover From Her Injury

November 15, 2022 By ezarkos

Last week while a volunteer was grooming Garnet, we noticed that her right front leg was swollen. In looking at the injury more closely, it was apparent from the swelling that she had bowed (torn) her digital flexor tendon, which is the large tendon that goes up the back of the leg to the knee. She did not seem uncomfortable or lame on the leg, which was a good sign that it was not a more serious injury, although the area was swollen and there was quite a bit of heat in the injured area. We … [Read more...]

UPDATE 2022: Garnet

February 15, 2022 By ezarkos

It's been just about six months since Garnet came to Hanaeleh. We realized very quickly that her breathing issues were serious, and discovered that her larynx was infected and she had almost no airway left to breathe through. We decided to go ahead with surgery to remove part of her larynx so she would have an adequate airway and would be able to live normally. It took about a month of recovery, but since then, Garnet has enjoyed her time running around the arena! She is building up the … [Read more...]
