Horses and the Rain

March 13, 2023 By ezarkos

This winter has been incredibly frustrating at the ranch. We deal with one winter storm only to be hit a week later by another. It's been difficult on both the volunteers as well as the horses, as the mud makes everything more arduous. This year has also been unusually COLD, which has meant that we have had to break out more blankets than usual, and we've even had to put two blankets on when it is obvious that the horse is still cold. It is true that usually horses do not need blankets as long … [Read more...]

RIP Darren

March 5, 2023 By ezarkos

We are very sad (well, many of us are sad) to have to report that Darren the rooster has passed away. He was almost 13 years old (most roosters live 6-8 years). He was found mostly unresponsive on Thursday, and Elizabeth took him home so he could be warm and dry. He passed quietly and peacefully that evening. Darren's Origin Story Darren was a force of nature, a chick who had been a "project" by an elementary school classroom (please don't do this unless you plan on keeping the chickens for … [Read more...]

RIP Hershey

February 4, 2023 By ezarkos

It is with great sadness that we report this past week we had to help Hershey cross the Rainbow Bridge. Hershey was a 27 year-old Appendix (Thoroughbred and Quarter horse cross) who was one of our first rescues. He was a show jumper, but his owner could no longer afford him, and he had some personality *quirks* that made him difficult to work with. Hershey had been in a box stall for much of his life, and except for a few months in a pasture, he was not out with other horses, and he did not have … [Read more...]

Congratulations to Sierra and Charlotte!

January 13, 2023 By ezarkos

We are very pleased to announce that our very own board member and volunteer coordinator, Charlotte, has decided to adopt Sierra! Hanaeleh rescued Sierra in August of 2021. Before she came to us, Sierra had been given to a family who had no horse experience. Sierra was very sweet on the ground, but the family quickly realized that the daily work that is required to care for a horse was more than they could handle. Sierra also had high ringbone- an issue that would not necessarily make her … [Read more...]

Help “Spirit” 9 y/o Buckskin Quarter Horse Gelding Find a New Home (Norco CA)

June 17, 2025 By ezarkos

We were contacted by one of our supporters who had rescued a nine year-old buckskin Quarter Horse gelding from auction. He was shut down at first, but she has done quite a bit of work with him on the ground and he is starting to come around and be more sociable. Sadly, Spirit has navicular, and … [Read More...]
