Hanaeleh’s Horses Get Microchips!

November 7, 2023 By ezarkos

Picture of a chestnut horse (Hope) being checked for a microchip

One of the things we do in preparation for fire season is microchipping all of our horses. While microchips are excellent for helping to identify horses who have been stolen, horses who are at an auction, they are also helpful in declaring ownership, especially during a natural disaster. Microchipping for safety We saw during Katrina that one of the issues that came up time and again were people who were looking for their horses, but even with a picture, the fact is that many horses look the … [Read more...]

RIP Grace

October 11, 2023 By ezarkos

We are very saddened to report that we had to make the very difficult decision to help Grace across the Rainbow Bridge. Grace was a lovely little Arabian mare who was in her mid 30s, and unfortunately age and arthritis started to creep up on her, making the past year difficult. This past winter she had lost quite a bit of weight, so we have been trying to continually change her food to find a combination that would help her gain back her weight. She would do poorly, then rally for a few months, … [Read more...]

Yearly Teeth Float for Hanaeleh’s Horses

September 19, 2023 By ezarkos

Yearly Dental Check-Up Every year our vet comes out to float all of Hanaeleh's horses teeth. Unlike humans, horses' teeth continue to grow throughout their lifetime. In the wild, horses eat for 10-12 hours a day, so they naturally grind down their teeth. Domesticated horses, however, are fed at intervals, and their teeth can get sharp points. Older horses often have special needs to keep their bite surface flat so they can masticate (chew) their food efficiently. The vet checks for points … [Read more...]

For Adoption: Abe, 3 Yr Old Mule and Starlight, 2 Yr Old Filly

September 5, 2023 By ezarkos

Abe and Starlight: The Backstory In April, Hanaeleh posted that we were trying to save two baby foals who were going to be sent to slaughter. Their mothers had already been shipped :-( and these babies had literally hours before they were going to be put on the truck to Mexico (laws state that any horse six months or older can be sent to slaughter). Obviously this is one of the many, many reasons we are pushing for the passage of the SAFE Act. Please send your legislator a letter saying you … [Read more...]
