Beware the “52 Thoroughbred” Horses Post!

July 10, 2020 By Hanaeleh

Hello all!

There are e-mails and viral social media posts that have been around for a few years saying that “52 Thoroughbreds need homes or they will be sent to slaughter.” This was a valid post in 2011, but the horses were all saved, and now this just gets randomly circulated every six months or so.

The post has been updated over the past nine years. We’ve seen various different subtle changes- the location of the horses, why the horses are in danger (the newest reason is the owner passed away from Covid-19) and even the phone number directed to call. Most recently the post says to call “Ashley” at a 219 area code.

We really appreciate people reaching out and letting us know when there are dire situations. We can’t be everywhere and we really rely on our network to help us become aware of horses who are in need.

You can sleep soundly, however, whenever you come across a “52 Thoroughbreds post.” The best thing you can do when you see a “52 Thoroughbreds” post is to kindly let the person who posted it know that these horses are safe and please ask them to delete it.

Because of the various updates, it is obvious that some internet troll is bored and has nothing better to do than pass this around a few times a year. As a result, educating people won’t guarantee that the “52 Thoroughbreds” posts will disappear forever, but the more people who are aware that this is no longer valid will help to prevent it from getting traction.

Thank you to everyone who is letting us know about horses in need. We do know that your heart is in the right place and want to help horses. Just please don’t forward these posts on anymore, OK? Thank you!
