Austin Update

Austin gives our Vice President Jocelyn a quick kiss

Austin gives our Vice President Jocelyn a quick kiss

Austin is continuing to do well in Hanaeleh’s care. It has only been three weeks, but we are already seeing him gain weight and his coat is looking so much better! Last week he got a nice fungal bath to get rid of some of the fungus that is across his back and legs. We think we were able to kill much of the fungus across his back, but his legs are a more severe case, and will require daily medication.

Austin's bedsores are healed over, so we were able to put fly wraps on him this week.

Austin’s bedsores on his fetlocks are healed, so we took the bell boots off, and now he has fly wraps to protect his legs. After we had his feet trimmed, he had two abscesses blow out, but those are growing over now, and he seems to be much more comfortable. We are still not requiring him to move much, but he gets turned out everyday, either in the round pen, or in the arena with Aurora. The two have bonded, and enjoy each other’s company, although Aurora seems more excited about having a new friend than Austin does.

Austin-update-1

Austin is gaining weight and his coat is looking so shiny now that the fungus is gone!

Austin is a favorite with many of our volunteers, but we are taking it slowly and letting him settle in. It’s probably a bit overwhelming for him to have so many new people interested in him and wanting his attention, but he seems to be enjoying people. He has a quirk in that he will put his ears back when first meeting people, but then puts his ears forward when he recognizes the people. We’re not sure if this habit will change now that he is around more people, or if it is just part of his personality.

We look forward to watching Austin continue to heal and grow more personable over the upcoming weeks. We will continue to provide updates, so please be sure to check in!
