SAFE! Washington State: 18 y/o Paint Mare Needs Rescue!

August 23, 2019 By ezarkos

UPDATE: We received word on Monday afternoon that Poppy is safe! We actually ended up with three people who offered to help! This is after so many other groups that were called just said, “Sorry, full.” Hats off to the Hanaeleh community! You guys are amazing!

The man who was going to sell her for slaughter agreed to release her, and Poppy went straight to the vet that afternoon! She will now get the care and love she needs to live out the rest of her life in peace and safety.

Thank you all again for all of your support! Another horsie life saved because of you!

=====================================================================

We were contacted by a woman who is trying to save a camp horse from slaughter. Camp horses are those lovely horses your children ride around during summer camp- in this instance, it is a YMCA in Washington state. These horses are used for the duration of the camp, then often returned to a feedlot or sold at auction to an uncertain fate. Poppy’s fate, however, has been determined by the fact that she was recently diagnosed with Cushing’s disease, which means her pituitary gland creates too much cortizol. She needs to be on daily medication and a low-protein/sugar diet, but she could live a very long life as long as she gets treatment.

The camp owner, however, has decided that, while Poppy has made his camp money and toted kids on her back for who knows how many years, at the end of this year’s camp, he will not take care of her, but instead will sell her to a slaughterhouse in Canada, instead.

Someone found out about Poppy and wanted to create a different ending for her. Unfortunately, although she called every rescue in Washington, they were unable to help her. We are in Orange County, CA, so our resources to help Poppy are limited, but we are willing to at least try.

Obviously Poppy is not at Hanaeleh, but is still at the YMCA camp in Washington state. If you are in the Washington/Oregon area, and are willing to take Poppy, or have other ideas to help save her, please contact elizabeth@hanaeleh.org or call: (949) 842-7408.

It would be lovely to find a miracle for Poppy!
