Ulysses Eating His Grain

April 3, 2013 By ezarkos

Ulysses is one of our rescues from the Riverside Animal Shelter.  He is a very beautiful horse who suffered an intense amount of abuse at the hands of humans; when we picked him up, he had scars from his head to his tail.  His tendons were so damaged that it looks like they have been bowed multiple times.  There are scars from rope burns on his muzzle and legs.  Then the humans who had done this to him, abandoned him in a riverbed to starve to death.

We have had Ulysses for almost a year now, and he has gained back all of his weight and his hair has grown over many of his scars. Unfortunately, Ulysses is neurological, and there is nothing we can do to change that except keep him safe.  He cannot stand on three legs, so he cannot have his feet trimmed. We have looked into the possiblity of finding a pasture for him, but it is difficult to find a place that will accomodate his special needs.

Ulysses is a very special character, however- even after all of the abuse he has suffered at the hands of humans, he will come over and say hello to anyone who comes up. His favorite part of the day, however, is getting his grain. He eats it with great gusto- just puts his whole face in and drips it everywhere (including any unsuspecting passersby!).  You can see by the pictures how much fun he has!
