This last Saturday was our first Horse Olympics and Chili Cookoff out at Hanaeleh! Our volunteers did an excellent job of working with the horses through four main events: On-ground Keyhole (where they would run from one side of the arena, turn around, then run back), moving through the cones (without knocking them over), walking over the poles (without touching them), and walking through the "car wash" (horses don't like things touching their faces, so this was more difficult than it may seem … [Read more...]
UPDATE: Brutus
Brutus came to Hanaeleh last April. We were not anticipating taking in another horse; in fact, Elizabeth was just getting on her horse to go out on a trail ride when she received a call that there was a group of teenagers wandering about the canyon with a crazy two year-old stallion, who was rearing and out of control. UPDATE: Savannah
Savannah came to us a few years ago, horribly emaciated and overall in terrible shape. She had been a broodmare who had been neglected and was rescued, but the woman who rescued her did not have the funds to rehabilitate Savannah. When we got her, her foal had found a home, but she had been nursing him for so long with so little food that her own system was severely compromised; her hair was falling out, she had other skin and fungal infections, cuts on her would not heal normally, etc. It took … [Read more...]
