Monday, January 3, 2022 was so awful I don't even know how to explain it. I was called out early Monday morning because Freya was having some difficulties getting up. She has severe DSLD (fallen fetlocks) in her hind legs, so as this disease progresses, it makes it more and more difficult for her to use her hind legs. UPDATE: Rio
Rio was adopted by our treasurer, Lori, and has been living at Hanaeleh for about ten years- he is now 25 years old. A few years ago he was diagnosed with a hematoma in his nasal cavity that was impeding air intake, and he was put on prednilosone to help reduce the swelling, and promote regular breathing. One of the side effects of the prednilosone is the suppression of the immune system, and Rio started to come down with topical fungal infections. Horse Olympics
This last Saturday was our first Horse Olympics and Chili Cookoff out at Hanaeleh! Our volunteers did an excellent job of working with the horses through four main events: On-ground Keyhole (where they would run from one side of the arena, turn around, then run back), moving through the cones (without knocking them over), walking over the poles (without touching them), and walking through the "car wash" (horses don't like things touching their faces, so this was more difficult than it may seem … [Read more...]
UPDATE: Stella (and Gypsy!)
Stella came to live at Hanaeleh a few years ago when her owner, Alberta, needed some extra help. Alberta is one of our neighbors and has been very helpful through the years, so when she said she needed some help, we were happy to provide a temporary place for Stella! Stella was originally slated to return home in November, when she put her foot through the bars and got it stuck, and in the ensuing craziness of trying to get her out, Alberta fractured her arm.
