Hi All-
A few announcements:
1. It's supposed to rain this weekend, so please be sure to call the volunteer hotline to see if we're going to meet! (949) 614-6733.
2. Please stay tuned for announcements this week regarding the Swallow's Day Parade.
3. Reno's asthma is getting worse- please be certain not to leave any buckets with hay next to his stall- put another bucket on top if necessary.
4. Lori B's family purchased another 18 buckets for Hanaeleh- they seem very sturdy, but please be sure not to fill them too high so they last longer! Also, please only leave buckets near the blue shed or by the hay shed- the pipes are too shallow on the hill for a truck to drive up without possibly compromising or even bursting the pipes.
5. Reminder- our next volunteer meeting is Saturday, April 2nd and our next work day is Saturday, April 9th. Our next clinic is Sunday, April 10th.
For your viewing pleasure, the Horsie Update:
Charley- He has his good days and bad days. When he is feeling good he is very "up" and wants to run around. On his bad days, he is gimpy and cannot go above a walk without limping. On the plus side, he has been feeling mostly good this past week!
Annie- She is fat! We need to work her more or else she will be so fat it will be unhealthy. Such a far cry from when we first got her!
Rio- He is cute, as always. He taught one of Lori B's friends how to groom this weekend, and we are working him in a new bit which he seems to be enjoying.
Reno- He is doing well, but his heaves are getting worse- we need to keep all hay from him and keep him calm to reduce any future attacks. We have antihistamine in the back paddock which will help eliminate an attack within 20 minutes of administering it, so if Lori and I are not on-site and you observe him wheezing, please call one of us for instructions on how to feed it.
Ella and Raphael- They are looking good, but they are still very arthritic. The warm weather seems easier on their bones, so hopefully this weekend doesn't get too cold!
Sapphire- She was very good, if lazy, this weekend, but today seemed lame, so we will give her a few days off. It seems to be a muscle injury, so she might have just overexerted herself.
Baron- We are very excited to say that he has a family who is interested in adopting him! They are very nice people and are completely aware of all of his silly issues, and still love him- so that says a lot, right there. 😉 We will let you know what day Baron will be going so you will have a chance (again!) to wish him good luck in his new home.
Nevada- He is doing very well and really likes Taryn! He is beginning to nip again, however, so please be very careful around him, and be very aware that he might try to bite you. If you are walking him and he moves like he is going to try to nip or bite, twist his nostril slightly and he will stop.
Tamahome- He is losing his winter coat so he looks like he has mange- his summer coat is black and so he looks like he has some strange skin condition! Other than that, he was very good this weekend when I was riding around.
Gypsy- Cute as pie, as always. Please do remember, if you are not able to be assertive, please do NOT go up near her stall. Just standing there and not doing anything is a challenge to her, and she can kick you through the stall. If you are not comfortable around her, the best solution is to wave to her from afar.
On this note, I would please ask that people discontinue making any disparaging remarks about Gypsy or any of the other horses. There is a difference between joking around and actually making genuine negative remarks about the horses. One of the volunteers actually caused Gypsy's behavior; essentially, any issues the horses have are because of humans. If you are not comfortable around some of the horses, that is completely fine- horses are large, unpredictable creatures, and horses can be dangerous. What I do NOT want, however, is for people to act negatively towards any of the horses- while you may not realize it, your body language says a lot to a horse, and they can sense fear or apprehension or even dislike. Hanaeleh is not a place for judgment or to harbor negative energy. None of us are perfect, nor are the horses. They do not judge us and I request that you offer them that same respect.
Thank you again for your help, and hopefully it will stay dry this weekend!
Elizabeth
