Hi Everybody-
Sorry for the tardiness of the update- it was a long week!
We took Tequila up to his new home on Sunday- he was great, and loaded very well into the trailer. His original story is up on the blog if you want to read it! We are so happy that he is with a wonderful person who is going to take care of him!
When I first saw Tequila, he was very angry and would try to bite… his owner did not pet him or give him much attention, and continued to ride Tequila even when he was lame. I took him out last Friday to walk him around, and he would move like he was going to bite me most of the walk, but I told him I would rather he not, so he didn’t. He did a few crow hops while walking, but I just stood out of the way and moved him in a circle, and he stopped. Essentially, he acted like he was testing to see what was going to happen, and when the violence that he had experienced prior did not occur, he must have felt safe, because on Sunday he was like a completely different horse. He walked right into the trailer, walked right out, went to the turnout no problem, came back from the turnout no problem, stood at the crossties like a show horse, picked up all of his feet with no problem, etc., etc., etc. Oh… and none of this was with the stud chain that we were told he “had to have” in order to keep him in line.
We are very thankful to Shelley and Andy who went out to see Tequila at his previous barn everyday and even went up to LA to meet his new owner! They taught Tequila to “kiss” (which is probably more courageous than I would attempt, but he really liked it!). I think Tequila will really miss the both of them, and I hope that they find a way to stay a part of his life in some way.
For the other horses you know and love:
Charley- We are hoping to build his run soon- his area up under the shelter is getting yucky, but we keep cleaning it out! He is finally growing in his winter coat, but I just think it will be safer to blanket him this winter.
Gypsy- In case you’re looking for her, she’s in Rio/Annie’s old paddock- we played musical horses this week! She is cute as always, and you will be surprised when you see her costume!!
Reno- His heaves seem to be getting better with the pellets and hay combo. Make sure to wet it down in the pm. We got him some orchard pellets instead of Timothy pellets… so he will eat orchard HAY no problem, but the pellets he doesn’t care for. We’ll give him a few more days, but we may have to go back to the Timothy pellets (which, of course, are more expensive).
Raphael- He is in Gypsy’s old stall with Ella. His leg looks good, and we’ve taken off the wraps on his hind legs- the hematoma on his belly is gone, too. Yay!
Ella- In with Raphael in Gypsy’s old stall. Her stifle is still giving her trouble, and she has managed to open bedsores on both front legs. Of course. But she has not cut herself (cross your fingers) on anything in this stall.
Rio- In Raphael/Ella’s old paddock- he seems to be having fun with a bigger area, and was very good at the horse care clinic on Sunday morning. He had two little girls groom him and walk him around and he was very good. 🙂
Annie- In Raphael/Ella’s old paddock (in with Rio). She is doing great with the bit, and has regressed some with the saddle, so we’re still working on that, but she did very well in the clinic on Sunday! 🙂
Sapphire- She managed to tear part of her hoof off, but we’re hoping that the farrier can cut around most of it this weekend. Other than that, she is great- I think she wishes the rain would stop so she can run, though… the Thoroughbred in her is getting antsy.
Nevada- He is enjoying his walks more, and really is becoming a love. 🙂
Tamahome- He has been helping trim the pine tree by the tie rail. 🙂 He has been needing more “Elizabeth” time lately, so he did not participate in the clinic on Sunday, but he still enjoys everyone’s attention (and cookies!).
That should be everyone! The kitties and chickens are doing well- the chickens have finally started to lay eggs again, so you can lay off the jokes about stew! >(
We hope to see everyone on Saturday for the costume contest!
